Racism and xenophobia

Francisco Quezada Ramírez

July 9, 2003. Madrid

During a discussion, a young man hit the victim on the face with a motorcycle helmet that caused him a severe head injury, becoming death after four days in a coma. The victim was taking some refreshments close to a nut shop with his two brothers, according with one of them. Four young men on a motorcycles came out across the pedestrian pavement surrounding them and making hard noises with the accelerator. After the victim and his brothers reprobated their attitude, one of the motorcycle men slammed a helmet in Francisco’s face and then run away. The family of the victim blamed the attack on a group of young Spanish guys “that usually insult and throw a lot of things to Latin American people living in the neighborhood. In ‘Las Musas’ everybody knows them because they are highly violent. There is a Chinese guy, owner of a nut shop, who is persistently scared by this gang”, they added.
